31Ways2GetItStarted™!: January 24, 2013

Day 24: Accountability

Accountability is so crucial. Half the reason clients hire me is they want to know that someone, besides them, gives a sh*t and cares and will be checking in regularly to make sure they did what they promised. Obviously, some of this is our need, as humans, to make emotional connections and reach out to others and feel less alone. I've had countless clients say,” Thanks for paying attention,” when I snapped at them for not doing what they promised. Um. That came out bad but you know what I meant. When I say “snapped,” I mean, “share the love.” Or something.

So if you’re trying to change jobs, or lose weight, or even just start the process of figuring out what exactly it is that you’re trying to change, why not use social media to keep you accountable? You could, for example, start a Facebook page devoted to your particular journey, get your friends to like it, and start documenting your transformation. Not only will that keep you accountable to all the people who liked the page, but the more you do, the more you’ll be able to do. It will give you more ideas, which will give you more opportunities. Eventually, people who aren’t your friends will come along to watch and learn…now, you’re really cooking.

You could create a Twitter account devoted to your particular interest, and start communicating with other people in the same boat. Now, you’re broadening your network and the bigger your network, the bigger your possibilities. There’s a whole world out there, why would you just isolate yourself with your fears and concerns? People everywhere are pretty much the same. Let your journey inspire someone else…and you have no idea what could come of it. Maybe you’ll “just” accomplish your goals. #whoa Or maybe, as you inspire others, your goals will get a whole lot bigger and a whole lot more liberating. That’s the kind of accountability I’m talking about, baby!
